With lockdowns, closed restaurants, and entertainment venues, television has become a central entertainment source. FaceTime calls with friends and family are not complete without an update on what everyone is binge-watching. And without live sports, people are turning to watch more fictional content so we thought it was a good time to highlight our favorite fictional sports teams.
We sorted the list by best team uniforms:
The Tune Squad
Michael Jordan, the most sought-after athlete, joined the Looney Toons venture, Space Jam, in 1996. The movie became an instant hit, and children worldwide fantasized about the “Space Jam 11's” sneakers, as shown in the classic. The attire worn by both teams, Toon Squad and Moonstar’s in amalgamation with the NBA logo, quickly made it an all-time favorite for many generations.
2. The Mighty Ducks
“The Mighty Ducks” blessed us with its debut back in 1992. The series of movies became so popular that a year after the first film was released, Disney founded an NHL team called the “Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.” Their iconic duck face in a hockey mask made their team uniform the best on the ice.
3. Charlestown Chiefs
The Chief’s jerseys were unique in that their logo was simply their name. The prominent yellow lettering made a statement. The mighty Charlestown Chiefs could outdo any team in those classy jerseys and that puts them in our top 3.
4. Flint Tropics
The Flint Tropics were the key team in the 2008 film Semi-Pro. The Flint Tropics are the worst team in the league, but in a classic underdog story, they go on a winning streak and have an excitement-filled last game. We won’t spoil the movie for you, but the hilarity of this movie, the classic underdog plot, and the colorful retro look of their team uniforms put them at #4.
5. The Bad News Bears
The fact that this movie debuted in 1976 automatically gives the Bad News Bears retro status. Their font and yellow-and-white color palette further add to the look. Forty-five years later, the uniform is still classy, and their fitted hats are quite popular.
6. Bayside Tigers
Calling out the 80s kids who grew up on Saved By the Bell — this one is for you. Although the show did not have many sporting events, the Bayside Tigers spirit wear played a significant role in the gang’s wardrobe.
7. Dillon Panthers
Dillon Panthers were featured in the football classic Friday Night Lights. The film depicted the immensely popular Friday night Texas ritual of attending a high school football game. The Panthers’ uniforms were based on the uniforms of the Pflugerville Panthers. They don a bright blue and yellow combination and use high-quality apparel — Under Armour. Their good taste earns them the #7 spot.
8. Miami Sharks
We will continue our football trend by watching the movie Any Given Sunday and the featured team, the Miami Sharks. These uniforms pair simplicity and no-nonsense design for a sleek modern look perfectly representing the Sharks. We appreciate how they stick to the basics and focus on football.
9. Western University Dolphins
The 1994 classic, Blue Chips, kicked off Shaquille O’Neal’s acting career as well as the fictional existence of the Western University Dolphins. Despite having appearances from many basketball celebrities, Shaquille O’Neal, Penny Hardaway, Bob Knight, Rick Pitino, Nolan Richardson, Bob Cousy, Larry Bird, Jerry Tarkanian, Matt Painter, Allan Houston, Dick Vitale, Jim Boeheim, Dan Dakich, and Bobby Hurley, the film did not do well. However, the number of basketball greats donning the jerseys made it a must-have for our top 10 list.
10. New York Knights
Rounding out our list is the New York Knights jersey, as seen in The Natural. This look was so popular that Ebbets Field Flannels decided to produce and sell the jerseys.
Being in the team uniform, spirit wear, and school uniform space, we see a lot of team apparel. This list was our top fictional teams, but there are many more that we did not get a chance to mention. Is one of your favorites not listed? Tell us about it.
